The Toxic Avenger, Joe DiPietro and David Bryan’s stage musical version of the 1984 film of the same name, is to transfer to the London’s Arts Theatre. Performances will begin September 28 prior to an official opening October 2; it will play a ten-week run through December 3.

Directed by Benji Sperring, this production was originally seen at Southwark Playhouse in April 2016 and will play a month-long season at the Edinburgh Festival before transferring to London.

Based on Lloyd Kaufman’s cult 1984 comedy schlock-horror Troma film, The Toxic Avenger tells the story of the citizens of  Tromaville, who are crying out for a hero. Enter nerdy Melvin Ferd the Third, an aspiring earth scientist, determined to clean up the state’s major toxic waste problem. When a corrupt Mayor and her government goons get wind of his plans, they vow to stop this heroic feat. Melvin is attacked and tossed into a vat of toxic waste... transforming him instantly into The Toxic Avenger, New Jersey’s first superhero.

In a press statement prior to its first London outing at Southwark Playhouse, book writer and co-lyricist DiPetro commented, “The Toxic Avenger is a modern, musical superhero and the world leader in the fight against pollution, corruption and evil politicians. So how brilliant that he's finally going where he's needed most: London.”

Casting is still to be announced. The creative team includes Alex Beetschen as musical director, Lucie Pankhurst as choreographer, and Nic Farman as lighting designer. It is produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment and Derek Nicol and Paul Walden for Flying Entertainment.
